Uganda's education system has undergone significant expansion since Universal Primary Education (UPE) in 1997 and Universal Secondary Education (USE) in 2007. Primary enrollment has grown from approximately 3 million in 1997 to over 10 million today. By the metric of getting children into school — Uganda's policies have been successful. The quality challenge is more sobering: classrooms routinely contain 80–100 children with a single teacher, learning materials are inadequate, and teacher absenteeism is significant.

Uganda's Best Schools

Top Private Schools in Kampala

Kampala's private school sector offers significantly better quality than the government school system, serving Uganda's growing middle class and the expatriate community. Aga Khan School Kampala is widely regarded as one of the top schools in the country, offering the IB curriculum with strong academic results. Kampala International School Uganda (KISU) serves the expatriate community with the Cambridge curriculum. Greenhill Academy and St Mary's College Kisubi are among the most respected Ugandan-founded private schools.

National Schools

Uganda's best national schools — including Makerere College School, Gayaza High School (for girls), and Kings College Budo — maintain strong academic cultures within the national curriculum and have produced disproportionate numbers of Uganda's academic and professional leaders.

Virtual Schooling in Uganda

For Ugandan families who want their children to follow the British international curriculum without the $8,000–$15,000 annual fees of Kampala's international schools, accredited virtual schools offer a compelling alternative. Sunrise Virtual School serves students across Uganda with Cambridge-compliant, Pearson Edexcel-accredited live virtual schooling at average annual fees of approximately $170 per learner. For Ugandan families with reliable internet access, this provides internationally recognized education that would otherwise be financially out of reach.
